Let's walk into the history of Lianjiang wooden sailing

Experience the wisdom of the ancients up close

In the Song and Yuan Dynasties, Fu Chuan created the prosperity of the Maritime Silk Road; During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Fu ships rushed headlong to the Japanese ships, making a contribution to the defense of the homeland... The blessing ship in wind and rain has been continued, and the blood of Fujian ship administration culture has been continued. Lianjiang has a long coastline, the boat is the lifeblood of fishermen, is an indispensable means of production. It is common sense for people in fishing villages to master shipbuilding skills, so it is not surprising that shipbuilding skills still have strong vitality in Lianjiang.

As the protection unit of Lianjiang wooden sailing ship, Fujian Taiyuan Shipbuilding Company, formerly known as Lianjiangbei Jiaobao Shipyard, is the only well-preserved folk shipyard in Fuzhou so far. It is responsible for inheriting Lianjiang's traditional wooden sailing craft.

Fir and camphor are good wood for shipbuilding. With an armful of numbers and a ruler in their hands, the master can lay out the materials. This is the charm of traditional skills.

To build a ship is to choose an auspicious day, to honor the gods and the slipway earth. First in the keel head hang three feet three three red cloth, the ceremony, the ship owner issued red envelopes, in order to all the best. The shape and size of the keel basically determine the performance and tonnage of the ship.

▲ Watertight compartments technology

For traditional wooden sailboats, watertight compartments are an important part of the hull. Craftsmen usually use bamboo silk and tung oil to caulk the joints, which can seal the watertight compartments so that no water can enter. In addition, the internal space of the hull is also divided into several compartments, once a leak in a few compartments, will not harm the whole ship, this is watertight compartments technology. Watertight compartments were added to the UN Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2010.

The body of Lianjiang wooden sailboat is curved, the sail rope is made of palm fiber, the anchor cable is twisted with bamboo and rice poles, and the paint of the hull, cabin door, both sides of the hull and the stern are also exquisite. The craft, art and humanistic thoughts are perfectly combined here to seize the Lord of heaven skillfully, expressing the hope and desire of people on the sea for peace, and also reflecting the traditional thinking of the unity of heaven and man.

Due to the development of The Times, iron hull ships gradually rise, the space of traditional craft shipbuilding industry is greatly compressed, and the traditional wooden sailing craft is gradually lost. In order to protect and inherit the traditional culture, in 2020, Taiyuan Shipping Industry and Fujian Shipping Administration and Transportation Vocational College jointly restored the traditional Fujian wooden sailing classic ship type 300 years ago, and named it "Xinlan". Now, Xinlan's sails are back in the Minjiang Estuary, becoming a bright color on the sea.
